Enjoy Your Big Apple Vacation!

Volumes can be written about a vacation in New York City, the Big Apple! The first fascinating place the visitor will see is the airport they land in. Three major airports serve New York City, and the most interesting is Kennedy Airport, a futuristic city at the edge of Queens that has its own zip code. Though the visitor can take a taxi from the airport to the city, they might, if not too burdened with luggage, take the airport’s sleek monorail to the Long Island Railroad or the subway in Jamaica, Queens, and travel into Manhattan this way. Depending on how long the vacation is, the visitor might wish to buy an unlimited Metrocard for the week at a vending machine found in any subway station.

Hotels
New York accommodation can be extraordinarily expensive, if the visitor chooses to stay at a hotel like the Waldorf, or surprisingly reasonable if the visitor finds a small hotel or bed and breakfast tucked into the Upper East Side. After stowing their luggage in their room, the visitor can use their unlimited Metrocard to change from the bus to the subway and back as they travel all over the city.

Touristy Things
If the visitor begins in downtown Manhattan, they might wish to visit the 9/11 Memorial where the World Trade Center used to stand, or they might take a ferry to the statue of Liberty or Ellis Island. Once back on Manhattan and moving northward, they might tour Wall Street and the Stock Exchange, or visit Trinity Church. They can take in the restaurants of Chinatown and Little Italy, and the stores in Soho, the Bowery and the East Village. They can visit Union Square Park with its memorial archway, and visit a free art gallery or two. Many of these galleries are found on the extreme West Side of the island. The tourist can visit the Observation Deck of the Empire State Building and wander around Times Square, which is so full of lights that it’s as bright as day even at night. They can take in at least one Broadway extravaganza, though the best plays are actually off Broadway, and even in the outer boroughs. If the tourist visits Rockefeller Center around Christmastime they’ll be awed by the sight of the tree that’s put up every year near the skating rink. They can take all day to ramble around Central Park, then visit Harlem, including Columbia University and the beautiful, faux-Medieval Riverside Church and maybe take in as how at the world famous Apollo Theater. They might then visit the Cloisters, a museum and transplanted monastery, at the island’s northern end.
